NO JACKET! I left the house in just a top!

This week was even less inspiring than last week. It is half-term so spent most of the week lazing around at home working, sewing or just chilling, so not hugely exciting outfits for popping to the shops. Monday was glorious sunshine so I took my hand-sewing to the park to make the most of it, and it is a good job I did because the weather has been horrid since (hence all the pictures featuring my Minoru this week!). Tuesday was pouring with rain but I had to pop out to do errands, and made an exciting discovery on the way home which I will tell you all about in due course (I am waiting for some supplies to get delivered…)

I am analysing my month and will have my reflections on the challenge soon, maybe with some snazzy graphs and charts. Have any of my lovely readers been taking part in Me Made May this year? What are your thoughts now it is over?

*All days I have worn new me-made underpants and my Minoru rain jacket; this will apply for the rest of the month, unless specified.

Summertime Maxi Skirt

Hmmm… not a very inspiring week this week. Work was crazy and the weather was very British (some freezing days where my heating came on, and a mini-heatwave today). There was a narrowly-averted MeMadeMay disaster when my washing didn’t dry and I almost ran out of Me Made underwear, but I found a test-pair that I could wear that day. Must remember 8 pairs of pants is not enough for someone lazy and doing washing.

I have made some progress on my couture jacket and the outer-part is almost done (just 17hours to set in the sleeves!) so I hoping there will be a sneak peak of the construction soon. It is half-term and I have thirty end-of-year reports, so I am pretty sure I’ll find plenty of crafty distractions!

*All days I have worn new me-made underpants and my Minoru rain jacket; this will apply for the rest of the month, unless specified.

This week the weather was gloomy and so was my mood (my knitting-injured wrist has got worse after I began using it again, despite not looking at yarn) and I think it shows in my outfits; No pretty summer dresses but a lot of black. My newly-made black trousers and cardigan got a lot of wear this week, highlighting the need for some sensible basics in my wardrobe among the crazy prints!

Still lots more unblogged garments. I had been hoping to show you my new trousers but have been side-tracked by catching a bad cold and having lots of work to do; Next week is going to be hectic, so you may have to wait until half-term for some new garment posts.

*All days I have worn new me-made underpants and my Minoru rain jacket; this will apply for the rest of the month, unless specified.

Night time
I have been wearing my polka dot pyjama party pjs this week

Eeeek, I’ve worn a lot unblogged garments this week. I will try to remedy this soon for the recent makes (including this weekend’s latest creation). The weather cooled down after the bank holiday “heatwave” which meant I could wear long-sleeves to give me more wardrobe options this week.

After a week of the challenge I realised I didn’t have many plain garments to match with my crazy patterns. There were three options; Wear crazy clashing prints, wear nothing but dresses for the month, or make something. I chose option three. The stripy t-shirt was whipped up in an hour using left-overs from my Tiramisu and making up the pattern from my jersey block to give it inbuilt cap-sleeves. You will probably see more of these before the month is finished!

*All days I have worn new me-made underpants and my Minoru rain jacket; this will apply for the rest of the month, unless specified.

(no cardigan yet as am chilling at home)

All days I have worn new me-made underpants and my Minoru rain jacket (worn at 7am and 7pm and carried throughout the day); this will apply for the rest of the month, unless specified.

There were a lot of dresses this week, but I have sorted my wardrobe and got washing on the go so hopefully more separates next week. I am still debating whether I can survive without trousers at work for a month, or if I need to make some light-weight Thurlows…

My Miette!

After a heatwave all weekend, the weather is finally cool enough to put on my finished Miette (here and here) and take some photos. Hoorah!

I made button bands from some grosgrain ribbon (I had to match to the colour of the buttons as there was nothing that came close to matching the yarn colour). Apologies for the following close up of my chest, but look! The buttons don’t gape!!It is such a (pleasant) shock to wear a cardigan that fits my curves without being too tight or too baggy in places, it is really making me think carefully about my next knitting project.

p.s. Since it felt too hot for knitting or crochet at the weekend and I didn’t want to be dressmaking and adjusting sweaty garments, I got my sticker collection out and sorted some of my resources. Colour coordinated threads and tools organised on my door for easy access (and minimal tidying up!).Next on my tidy-up to-do list is vacuum-packing some of my fabric!

More Miette progress

At the beginning of the holidays I told you that I was working on my first sleeve of my Miette cardigan, so I am sure you are wondering why I haven’t finished yet. With nothing to do for weeks, surely I must have finished by now… well I’m sure I would have done if it weren’t for an inability to count/concentrate. As a teacher I shouldn’t really be admitting this (since I have had to tell cheeky kids in my class that I do actually know how to count), but there were extenuating circumstances.

I was knitting the sleeve in the round on the tube and using a row-counter app on my phone. Oh, is that my stop? Quick, must make sure I have got all 4 double pointed needles, don’t drop yarn on tube floor, put touch-screen phone in bag and accidentally press row counter, squash between commuters, change tube lines, back to knitting… now where was I?

Then I realised that I had picked up a couple of extra stitches when I started the sleeve, which made the join less gape-y. I’ve bookmarked today’s agenda’s Miette knit-along for tips about modifying the pattern but I had totally lost track of which row I was on, so there was nothing else to do but frog* the sleeve! eek! I worked out how many stitches I had and how many I needed to get to and worked out a new pattern of decreases, making sure I made copious notes this time and using my new row counter.

I also used the magic loop technique of knitting in the round, which made it easier to keep track of the beginning of the row. Now the sleeves are done I need to go and buy some buttons so I know how big to make the button holes – should I go for subtle or contrasting buttons?

Apologies for washed out pictures, it has been gloomy grey skies here all day – the real colour is a bit more turquoise.

*According to The Knitting Pocket Bible “the term ‘frog’ comes from the wish to pull or ‘rip’ vigorously at the knitting, so giving rise to the phrase ‘rip it, rip it!’ – which sounds like a frog’s croaking call.”

Miette progress

Last week I made a major decision that has given me extra knitting time. After more than 10 years I have stopped reading the Metro in the mornings – I decided that since I listen to Radio 4 in the morning I know all the real news by the time I get on the tube, and less Metro means more knitting. The extra 20minutes of knitting means a couple of extra rows a day, which means I have made some exciting progress on my Miette cardigan…

I got to the point where I could try the cardigan on!

The fit is good so far and there is more ease than I expected (the pattern has 2″ negative ease), but I’ll need to try it on again before I get to the bust darts.

Now I have put the sleeves onto scrap yarn I have lost approx a third of the stitches, and the knitting is speeding up – when there were 200 stitches on a row, I was barely managing one row per commute!
